Pretty thumbtacks by Torie Jayne

I loved how my pretty thumbtacks turned out so decided to make some bird ones for my new cloakroom pinboard: both practical and pretty!

This week on Flickr Faves Sunday, I bring you *ShabbyRosesCottage*, whose beautiful house caught my eye. I love the multi-textured collection of pretty birds on her wall, the pops of turquoise throughout, and the cross stitch wall mural in her lounge is heavenly.

Hand made felt birds for Christmas

Hand made felt birds for Christmas by Torie Jayne
Hand made felt birds for my Christmas tree

I want to hang pretty glittered birds on my Christmas tree this year to fit in with my Winter Wonderland theme. So, I designed a glittery winged felt bird to match my other Christmas birds. I have now made sixteen of them in white with pink glitter, antique pink, pale aqua and teal. Now I can't wait to hang them on my tree later next month!

Felt birds, How-to step by step
Hand made felt birds for Christmas, steps 1-4
Start by printing off the bird pattern at 100% and cut out the pattern pieces. Place pattern pieces on felt and, using your water soluble pen, trace around outside edges so you have one body piece and two wings. Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut out felt pieces. Then pin cut out felt pieces to another piece of felt.

Carefully cut around felt birds. You will now have two bird body pieces and two sets of wings. Now, with a damp cloth, blot pen lines until they disappear. With your bird pattern pieces still pinned together, join them together by whip stitching around outside edges with embroidery thread, leaving a gap of about 15mm unstitched so you can stuff the birds.

Begin to stuff the birds by gradually pushing small bits of stuffing through the unstitched hole using a small stick. Make sure to push stuffing into the tip of the tail and beak. Continue adding stuffing to the bird so that the bird feels firm to the grasp and holds its shape well, then whip stitch the hole close. Now with a needle threaded with white embroidery thread stitch a jump ring to the top of the bird along the seam.

With your wing felt pieces still pinned together, join the pieces together by whip stitching around outside edges with embroidery thread leaving a gap of about 15mm unstitched so you can stuff the wings as you did the bird's body. Again whip stitch the hole closed and repeat with other set of wing pieces.

Now position your wings on the body and pin in place to secure while you stitch the underside of the wings to the bird body. Then thread your ribbon through the jump ring that is attached to your bird and knot the ends together. Doing this at this stage allows you to hang your bird for the next step of PVA gluing your birds.

Using a small paint brush, apply a coat of PVA glue to the areas on the bird you wish to glitter in pink. Then immediately sprinkle with glitter, lightly tap the bird to remove excess glitter and hang up to dry. Once the glue holding the pink glitter is dry apply a small coating of PVA glue to the beak and sprinkle with gold glitter, tap to remove excess glitter, and leave to dry. Sew gold beads to face of bird using a beading needle threaded with sewing thread, so you have an 'eye' both sides.

Pretty wooden birds

Pretty wooden birds
Over the past couple of weeks I have been working on some hand made Christmas decorations to fit in with my Winter Wonderland colour palette and theme. First up is the pretty wooden bird I will decorate my home with at Christmas.

When I spied the wooden birds in Panduro Hobby I knew I had to buy a couple. At the time I had know idea how I would decorate them but knew I wanted them to be part of my Christmas decor. After much deliberation I decided to decorate them with a pretty floral pattern and a sprinkling of glitter. Now I just have to decide where they will sit at Christmas!?!

Glittered floral print Christmas bird - instructions 1-4
Start by carefully painting the sides of the wooden bird in pink paint using a small paint brush and leave to dry. Then, carefully paint the entire branch section of the wooden bird in peacock colour, turn upside down and leave paint to dry. To get a perfect fit on the printed card, place the dry wooden bird on the underside of the printed card and carefully trace around the edge of the bird with a sharp pencil, flip bird over and place next to previously drawn bird shape to avoid wastage and trace around the other side of the bird.

With a sharp pair of scissors, carefully cut out the bird shapes from the card and place to one side. Brush PVA glue onto front of the bird and firmly press the corresponding card shape onto glued front then leave to dry. Once dry, repeat with the shape for the back of the bird. With your bird in an upright position, coat the front and back in PVA glue to give it a protective coating and leave to dry.

Brush PVA glue onto teal-painted branch and immediately sprinkle with teal glitter before the glue starts to dry. Tap bird lightly to remove excess glitter and rest bird on its head to dry. Once dry, brush PVA glue onto pink-painted sides of bird and immediately sprinkle with pink glitter, tap lightly to remove excess glitter and leave to dry.

Tip
I hold my bird over a clean small plastic pot when sprinkling with glitter to catch any excess glitter so it can be reused

I adore the ceramic bird stoppers and must get more of the hand painted birds for this year's Christmas tree. Currently I have an aqua one that resides on my bird cage notice board in the kitchen and another pink one that hangs on my louvre doors.

Pretty cloakroom apothecary jars

Bird Apothecary Jar filled with spotty emery boards
Hair bobbles

I have had my two larger bird apothecary jars since last November when I ordered them on holiday in Florida from Modern Chic Home. At Christmas they were filled with coconut mushroom candy and chocolate sticks for my Winter Woodland themed dessert table. At Easter they were filled with pretty pink and blue M&M's and hand made chocolate butterflies for my Easter table. The rest of the time they have been carefully stored away. Not anymore! I finally will have a permanent home for them when they are placed on a shelf in my new laundry room and cloakroom.

After much deliberation as to what would look good and be useful in the bird apothecary jars, I filled the tallest one with hand wrapped soaps to match my colour and print theme that I showed you a couple of weeks back. For the shorter one I bought spotty emery boards from Cath Kidston and floral emery boards form Poundland. I like to display items in odd numbers, so I bought a third bird apothecary jar from Primrose & Plum. Choosing what to fill this one with was tricky but eventually I went for my small pink dotty hairbrush and hairbands to match my colour theme. Now I wait patiently for the room to be decorated so I can add my decorative touches!
