DIY vintage inspired baubles

DIY vintage inspired baubles by Torie Jayne

Last week I showed you the vintage Christmas tree decorations that I bought from Sunbury antiques market and on Sunday I showed you the gorgeous vintage Christmas tree decorations from Citrus and Orange and Loretoidas. Inspired by all these vintage baubles I decided to paint cheap plastic silver baubles with nail polish and dust them in vintage glitter to match my Vintage Christmas theme. I love how the polish gives them a worn look but still gives them a little shimmer and is a great way to use up old nail polish! I was also lucky enough to find some old metal glitter in my craft boxes which adds to their vintage look. If you can't find metal glitter try using a course glitter instead.

Here's how...

Paper Rosettes

Paper Rosettes by Torie Jayne

The lovely peeps at new craft store Mushi Makes also sent me Tildas star tissue paper in grey brown. So to match my Vintage Christmas theme I have started making paper rosettes in the pretty tissue paper. Some to hang on my white Christmas tree and some smaller ones as cake toppers!

Here's how...

Paper Rosettes

Tools and Materials

Paper Rosettes, How-to step by step

Paper rosettes steps1-4

  • Start by cutting out a rectangle 25cm x 12cm from one sheet of tissue paper
  • Make 1cm wide accordion folds, creasing the paper carefully with each fold.
  • Using the accent star punch, carefully punch a star from each end
  • Using a pair of scissors round the end edges of the paper

Paper rosettes steps 5-8
  • Repeats steps 1-4 with a second sheet of tissue, and fold in half
  • Stack the two folded sheets of paper on top of each other ( making sure the fronts face the same way) and tie embroidery thread round centre
  • Place a piece of double sided tape on one side
  • Affix the thread so the ends stick out the top

Paper rosettes steps 9-12
  • Fold the two halves together
  • Repeat by placing a piece of double sided tape on one open side
  • Fold the two halves together
  • Repeat till the rosette is closed, tie loose ends of thread together

Pretty paper baubles

Pretty paper baubles by Torie Jayne

The lovely peeps at new craft store Mushi Makes sent me a Tildas "Winter memories" paper pack . A beautiful pad of 24 double sided sheets of 230gsm acid and lignin free paper in seven different patterns, three of each plus three cut-out sheets. So to match my Vintage Christmas theme I made a bunch of pretty paper baubles dusted with coarse white glitter to hang on my white Christmas tree.
Here's how...

Pretty paper baubles

Tools and Materials

Pretty paper baubles, How-to step by step

Pretty paper bauble -steps 1-4

  • Using the paper-mate cutters smallest circle, with the blade on the inner line
  • Cut out two circles of paper from each printed sheet, so you have nine circles
  • Fold all the circles of paper in half
  • Stack circles on top of each other, Wrap a lenth of thread all the way around the stack, so that it runs along the fold. Tie ends together at top of bauble to secure.

Pretty paper bauble -steps 5-8

  • Fold and unfold paper sections, so paper starts to fan out
  • Using a hot glue gun, place a dab of glue about 1/3 of the way up the top of the bauble, on the outside edge. Fold the facing flaps together and press to secure the glue.
  • On the next circle along, place a dab of glue about 1/3 of the way from the bottom.
  • Continue this all the way around, alternating high and low glue dabs.

Pretty paper bauble -steps 9-12
  • Once you've glued all the adjacent flaps together, knot ends of embroidery thread together to create a hanging loop
  • Paint a line of glue on all the outside edges of the bauble
  • Sprinkle glued edges with glitter, lightly tap to remove any excess
  • Hang to dry

Vintage Christmas tree decorations

Vintage Christmas decorations

Yesterday morning I got up at the crack of dawn and headed over to Kempton Park Racecourse with Holly from Sourdough and Rye, for the wonderful twice monthly Sunbury Antiques market. It was packed full of great stalls, not too chilly and best of all not raining! On this particular visit I had one thing on my mind, Christmas decorations to match my colour palette and theme...

Pink glittery deer ornament

Pink glittery deer ornament by Torie Jayne

Over the past couple of weeks I have been working on some handmade Christmas decorations to fit in with my Winter Wonderland colour palette and theme. Next up is the pink glittery deer ornament to hang on my Christmas tree. I want to use lots of my Christmas tree decorations from last year but I also want to inject some pink colour into my decorations, so I painted and glittered some inexpensive craft deer ornaments pink.

Glittering reindeer
Start by carefully painting the deer in pink paint using a small paint brush, ensuring to get into all the fret work, and leave to dry. Brush PVA glue onto painted deer and immediately sprinkle with pink glitter before the glue starts to dry. Tap string holding deer lightly to remove excess glitter and hang up to dry. Once dry, remove silver string and replace with pink and white bakers twine, securing the ends with a knot.

Tip
I hold my deer over a clean small plastic pot when sprinkling with glitter to catch any excess glitter so it can be reused.

Painted metal bird
To get the touch of silver sage green colour on my Winter Woodland Christmas tree, I am planning to hang a few pretty painted metal birds. This one usually hangs in my bird cage.
